Types of Therapy for Eating Disorders and How They Work
Any eating disorder is a form of mental health condition that may hamper your diet and how you look at food. Eating disorders are of various types. These include:
Binge eating disorder
Bulimia nervosa
Anorexia nervosa
People suffering from any kind of eating disorder may eat excessively, intake very little food, and often are obsessed with their weight or body shape. If a person suffering from an eating disorder does not undergo timely treatment, the condition can be life-threatening or quite serious. Therapy forms an integral part of the treatment plan.
Care alternatives
There are different types of care that are available to treat eating disorders. Check them out below:
1. Partial hospitalization
These are recommended for those who need more extensive treatment as compared to an outpatient program. The option is recommended for an individual who:
Should be monitored regularly
Is into activities such as fasting, purging, or bingeing on a daily basis
Has a type of eating disorder, which has an effect on their capability to function and yet not at an immediate risk
The program usually includes sessions lasting for many hours and takes place on most days of the week.
2. Outpatient program
It signifies that the patient comes back home after a treatment session.
The program is suitable for people who:
Are doing well in social settings, work, or school
Do not require regular monitoring
Are showing progress in the recovery process
The intensity of outpatient programs may differ based on the needs of an individual. Some patients may have 1-2 sessions in a week. For others, the sessions could be more frequent and longer.
3. Residential
If a person is undergoing the residential treatment program, they reside in a facility for a temporary period. Such facilities aim to address eating disorders. The facilities monitor and take care of the residents continuously. The program is apt for the following people:
Need daily monitoring
Require care for longer-term eating disorders
Have not experienced benefits from partial hospitalization or outpatient treatment programs.
