Caring For Your Mental Health

Mental Health and Therapy

In the daily rush of life, we often forget to take care of our physical health. What we forget even more is to look after our minds, our mental health. If the phrase 'mental health' brings to your mind any negative connotation, it is now time to unlearn and relearn. When we get a fever, we do not think twice before consulting a physician. Unfortunately, when it comes to our mental health issues, we shy away from going to a therapist or counselor. This has to change if we want to live a life with fewer worries and anxieties and more joy and fulfillment.

What is mental health?

When we say 'mental health', we mean a wide range of psychological, social, emotional, and personal well-being. The condition of our mental health determines how and what we think and feel. In turn, they impact what choices we make and how we act in private and public settings. It is very common for people to assume that the absence of mental illnesses translates to thriving mental health. This is far from the truth. Mental health is a component of your overall health that is as important as physical health. Therapy and counseling sessions can greatly benefit individuals suffering from mental issues. Another component of mental health treatment is to invest in personal health, both physical and mental, and self-care.

How to take care of your mental health?

How you take care of your mental health depends greatly on your personal inclinations. Although you should not take it lightly if mental health issues are causing severe distresses in your life. Some indications of severe mental issues include loss of sleep and appetite and difficulty focusing on any task. Other symptoms include the inability to carry out day-to-day activities and feeling unmotivated all the time. If you experience these symptoms, you must consult a therapist or counselor.

If you feel that your mental health issues are not very severe and manageable without professional intervention, you should still follow a few guidelines.

  • Get some amount of physical exercise every day, or as many days in a week as you can. You can engage in any type of fitness activity, including dancing, sports, rowing, etc.

  • Eat a diet that does not lack any important macro or micronutrients. Include fruits and veggies, and be mindful of what foods you are allergic to. A good diet and a healthy lifestyle go hand in hand.

  • Connect to people around you in whatever mode you feel comfortable, though nothing beats face-to-face interaction.

  • Practice gratitude and mindfulness. Be grateful for what you have, and be aware of your present without losing yourself in the past and future.
